Digg Magic

A couple weeks ago I wrote a Digg widget. I posted the widget to digg.com where it got a total of 5 diggs! Only 5!

Well over the weekend, someone made a request for a wordpress digg widget. which got a total of 725 Diggs. Clearly this person didn’t do any searching because a quick google search returns my widget as the FIRST return!

A couple hours late someone wrote a bad implementation of the idea (which violates Digg’s usage agreements). This plugin got 511 Diggs!!

So what happened here? Why did a bad plugin get so many diggs when my plugin only got 5! I blame the way that digg is setup. With 4,500+ upcoming stories at any given time, something has to happen pretty quick for your story to get anywhere.

I try to do my part. At some point throughout the day, I go through the first 10 pages of upcoming stories to see if there’s anything good there. However, you have to move very quickly or else once you click over to the next page, half of the “new” page are stories from the previous page.

I think that someone needs to “lock” the upcoming stories for 5-10 minutes to give you time to move through the pages. Or something!

So the real question here is.. What’s your method of finding and promoting upcoming stories?

My Kneeeeeee!

So this weekend was really short. Flew past. But I was in pain for most of it.

I did that 70 mile ride with JC and Nick. It was a good time, but about 50 miles into it, my knee started to HURT! It felt like someone was sticking me with a needle every time I moved it. So much pain. But I made it through the ride. It was good riding with them!

Got home from that about 5:30 and ate dinner and spent the night on the couch. Got to bed about midnight. Sunday I spent the whole day on the couch again. Went out that night to see a stand up comedy by Mary Lynn Rajskub with Ben. It was pretty good, but seemed really un-put together.

My aunt sent me this really cool link about the 2007 blizzard in Iowa. Pretty cool! Wish I could have been there to see it!

These guys are uber nerdy! I love it!

Hmm, I’ve been out every night this week. Although not really _out_. Hung out with Erick again and we watched Ellen’s Stand up. Good times. Thursday I went out with Ben to The Gabe Dixon Band. Really good band. I enjoyed it. After that we met up with Will and went to a couple bars to just chat and hang out in Weho.

Thursday I also had an interview with the University of Chicago – Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. There were 5 people on the interview, 2 of which had heavy accents and I couldn’t understand them and they kept asking me questions. I really enjoyed talking to them. It sounds really cool. But we all know I’m afraid of that sort of major move so even if I do get the job I’ll probably stay here.

Remember that house that we put an offer in on back in Jan? Well we didn’t get it back then, but it’s still on the market and my Realtor just told us that the owner is going to pay for all the upgrades that we wanted. So were putting in another offer soon. Not exactly sure when, as I’m also looking at a few houses here in the LA/OC area.

This weekend is very busy. 70 miles tomorrow, then a comedy show if I can get the free tickets. Sunday is 30 miles and then perhaps another comedy show with Ben.

I really need money people. PLEASE donate! I’ve sent some of my readers e-mail cards, but they keep getting sent back (Spam filter). Every dollar helps!

My cats got a hard core combing today, they hate me now. 🙁

MapMyRun

I was talking to one of my riding buddies and he showed me this really cool website called MapMyRun.com. You can go and plot out your runs,etc and they give you cool maps like this:

I’ll try from now on to map all my routes. We have less then 2 months till the event!

So I was playing around on Stumble again today and found that Andy B, a guy that I went to HS with, had submitted my blog to the site. Very strange I thought. I started googleing him and found some interesting things. The most interesting I found was that, not only did we go to the same HS, but also to the same college. Then we both managed to graduate at the same time with the SAME degree. And yet! I _never_ once saw him in any of my classes. How strange is that! (Did I mention he used to be f’ing hot! And still is!)

Ben and I had out discussion the other day. Honestly, I feel maybe he’s not ready for any sort of _real_ relationship at this point. He kept saying that he just can’t juggle seeing me as much as we have been (about every other day) and that we should cut back on how much we have been going out. He said that he’s spent the last three years as a loner and that he can’t adjust to not having all that time to himself. I honestly think that 2.5 months is more then enough time to adjust. Whatever. I’ll play along and we’ll see what happens.

Last night I went out with Erick again. We had JambaJuice, sat around the beach area and then headed back to his place cause it was getting too cold. We ended up just hanging out and chatting till about 9, it was really fun. But kinda creepy how into cars he is! Will from the ride this past weekend has been calling wanting to hang out as well. But he’s in Boston this weekend, and I’m busy the rest of the week.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot too, in that I need to work on keeping up with the friends I have. The problem here in LA is that everyone keeps themselves so busy, me included. That it’s hard to mesh schedules and just hang out. Everything has to be pre-planned and yet no one wants to commit to anything more then 5 minutes before.

I may be moving soon and not to where you’re all thinking. But I can’t really go into the details. It may either be 1,000 miles from where I am now or 1 mile. Who knows!
