Engine is torn apart

Well, it’s starting to warm up and I think I have decided that I want to try to be ready to go by “Cool Desert Nights” which is June 25-27 here in the Tri-Cities, WA. I posted on Reddit asking about good mechanics in town who would be willing to teach and help out and someone posted to call a guy by the name of Rod Pool. Does anyone here recognize that name?

Apparently he’s some ford racing legend. Anyway he came over Friday to look at the car and ended up staying for 3 hours telling me all about his past and what he does, etc. Really cool guy.

Saturday we took the car over to his shop and started the engine tear down. First thing we did was drain the oil out of it and Started out with a bit of water and then it was THICK and lots of chunky bits came out with it:

After that we took off the intake and tons of rust in one port, Rod was very concerned that water had frozen all the way up there… The freeze plugs were all burst outwards too.

Tons and tons of carbon build up everywhere.

Got the heads off and there was really bad rust in one cylinder. At this point, Rod was sure the block was toast. We sprayed some PB Blaster and let it sit for a while he told me more about the other projects in his shop and showed me pictures.

Then we got the bottom end opened up and started tearing it all apart. The bearings were all worn through down to the copper, they had dirt scratches in them, etc. Rod said it looked like someone hadn’t changed oil in it in 20,000-30,000 miles and was really ridding it rough

After the PB blaster loosened up the one cylinder, they came out with ease. He was actually surprised how easy it turned over and things were going great.. Until this:

Thankfully it doesn’t look like it did much damage to the walls.

Took us about 2 hours to get it completely torn apart:

And then I was there for another 5 hours while he told me more stories of racing and Ford Engineering in the 60’s-80’s. He also gave me an official Ford Wiring diagram so that I can try to figure out where that missing wire goes too.

The block and stuff will hopefully go to machine shop this week…
